How Your California Apostille Gets Done
California-issued documents are Apostilled by the California Secretary of State. The state fee is $20/Apostille per Apostille plus $6 per public official signature. Our concierge service handles every step for you - document review, notarization if needed, courier delivery to the Secretary of State, and overnight return.
For Los Angeles and Sacramento clients, our courier hand-delivers documents directly to the Secretary of State for same-day rush submission - with 24-48 hour turnaround on standard orders. Standard state processing elsewhere runs 5-10 business days. We confirm your exact timeline after reviewing your specific document.

State Apostille vs. Federal Apostille
The most common mistake in Apostille requests. Your document's issuing authority determines the correct path - confusing the two can cost weeks.
State Apostille
For documents issued in California by a state agency, county recorder, court, or commissioned notary public.
State fee: $20 per Apostille + $6 per public official signature
Federal Apostille
For documents issued by a U.S. federal agency. Submitting federal documents to Sacramento results in rejection and lost time.
Do not notarize your FBI background check - adding a notary stamp to a federal document is a leading cause of U.S. Dept. of State rejection.

Most California-issued documents can be authenticated for international use through the California Secretary of State. Here are the most common types we handle.
Birth & Vital Records
Birth certificates, marriage licenses, death certificates, and divorce decrees - submitted as certified copies, never notarized.
Diplomas & Transcripts
College diplomas, university transcripts, and professional credentials - must be notarized by a California Notary before submission.
Powers of Attorney
General, durable, and special powers of attorney - notarized and submitted to the Secretary of State.
Affidavits & Court Records
Sworn statements, court orders, judgments, and other legal documents requiring authentication for international use.
Corporate Documents
Articles of incorporation, certificates of good standing, board resolutions, and commercial agreements for overseas business.
CA DOJ Background Checks
California Department of Justice background check letters (state-issued) - do not confuse with the FBI background check, which is federal.

California state documents (birth certificates, diplomas, court records, CA DOJ background checks) are Apostilled by the California Secretary of State. Federal documents (FBI background checks, NARA records, USCIS certificates) must go through the U.S. Department of State in Washington D.C. Sending federal documents to Sacramento results in rejection.
All 128 member countries of the Hague Apostille Convention, including Mexico, all EU member states, the UK, Australia, Japan, South Korea, India, and Brazil. China joined in November 2023 and Canada joined in January 2024 - both now accept Apostilles. For non-member countries (including the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, and several others), documents require consular legalization instead.
